Kajang Punjabis keep their mother tongue alive and kicking

The Punjabi classes at Kajang, a Selangor city just on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, has grown from two students in 2002 to some 80 students today.

It takes much effort and working together to keep the weekend classes running over the last 17 years.

On Saturday (23 Feb 2019), the students, teachers and parents came together for a wonderfully-organised fund raising dinner at a hotel in Putrajaya.

The kids went on the stage to share Punjabi poetry and sang Punjabi songs, accompanied by Punjabi dances. It was an evening of fun and laughter, with the Punjabi culture and language permeating all around.

The sold-out event was one of the ways that the Punjabi Education Centre (PEC) Kajang raises funds for the classes that are held under the umbrella of the Gurdwara Sahib Kajang (GSK).

They even got the guest of honour, Director-General of Malaysia’s National Unity and Integration Department (Prime Minister’s Department) Baharin Idris, to pick up some Bhangra moves.

Baharin said he was delighted to know that the event exposed Sikh children to Punjabi culture and tradition, especially to enhance Punjabi language as a collective identity.

“It is still easy to create culture but what is difficult is to preserve it. It has taken ages for our forefathers to form such a composite and ethnically rich culture. What is important for us is to preserve our own culture,” he told the audience.

Baharin said that he would assist the centre to obtain funding to part-ease their funding burden.

“The PEC is run and funded by volunteers. We need assistance from the government,” GSK management committee president Ranjit Singh said in his speech earlier.

PEC Kajang is led by Harjinder Singh while Gurnam Kaur is the centre principal.

The PECs nationwide are supported by the Punjabi Education Trust Malaysia (PETM), the education wing of Khalsa Diwan Malaysia (KDM).

Fear of family shame drove newborn’s killing in US

A gruesome murder of a newborn baby in the US has shocked the Sikh community and Bakersfield neighbourhood in the US.

The details of the incident were captured by a local newspaper, Bakersfield.com:

“Behind a locked bathroom door, a 15-year-old gave birth to a baby in November in her family’s southwest Bakersfield home. Moments later, the door was unlocked and opened by her 23-year-old male cousin who took the crying newborn from her.

“The infant was handed to the teenager’s mother, who drowned the baby and wrapped it in a garbage bag. A hole was dug in a flower bed, the child’s body inside and covered with salt and then dirt.

“All in an attempt to shield the family from shame.

“That was the scenario laid out in court documents filed Thursday after police dug up the baby’s body earlier this week. The teen’s mother, Beant Kaur Dhillon, 43, told police she drowned the baby to prevent family shame, the documents said.”

In response to the incident, the US-based Sikh Coalition noted that it was devastated by the news coming out of Bakersfield, California.

“This tragedy is unequivocally unacceptable and we all have a responsibility to speak up against violence within our homes and communities.

“States across the US have Safe Haven laws where you can safely surrender your child at a hospital with staff or other designated Safe Haven locations. If you or someone you know is dealing with a family crisis and needs a confidential resource, please reach out to Sikh Family Center,” it said on its social media platforms.

In a comment on the Sikh Coalition’s Facebook page, Bobbie Singh-Allen noted the need for outlets for safe and open communication.

She added: “It is very challenging for Sikhs growing up in America. As an immigrant who moved here at the age of four, you are often lost as I was. You want to assimilate but are expected to live as though you are still in Punjab. Young women have little or no resources of support.

“I can’t help to wonder how many more horror stories exist but not reported? I feel heartbroken for the young lady who felt she had no options or hope. I don’t know how long this family has lived here to think this was acceptable or an only option.

“There is much work to do in our community. Kudos to those that have created culturally relative support groups and organizations. Heartbreaking.”

The first Pakistani Sikh in the West Punjab state assembly yesterday (27 Feb 2019) voiced his support for Pakistan as tension escalated with neighbouring India, with both sides claiming that they had shot down the other side’s fighter jet.

Former lawmaker Ramesh Singh Arora went on the Facebook to make it plain that he stood by his nation in the escalating tensions with India.

Yesterday, Pakistani and Indian fighter jets engaged in a skirmish over Indian-controlled territory in the disputed border state of Jammu and Kashmir. At least one Indian jet was shot down, with Pakistan capturing its pilot, reports New York Times.

The incursion came just one day after Indian aircraft flew into Pakistan and attacked near the town of Balakot. The Indian government claimed it was striking a training camp for Jaish-e-Mohammed, a terrorist group that was responsible for a Feb. 14 suicide bombing in southern Kashmir that killed at least 40 paramilitary forces. Pakistan has insisted it had no involvement in the suicide attack.

The beating of war drums comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing to lead BJP to India’s next general elections expected to be held in April and May 2019.

In an earlier Facebook entry, Ramesh wrote: “I strongly condemn Indian attack on Pakistan. Pak force’s quick response is commendable. Violation of Pakistan’s airspace would be responded in the same manner….”

Ramesh was elected Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) of Punjab in 2013 general elections from one of the seats reserved for non-Muslims. He chairs the assembly’s Standing Committee on Commerce & Investment.

In October 2017, he moved the Punjab Anand Karaj Bill 2017 at the assembly in a move that received no objections from any quarters.

Pakistan has a small Sikh community when the majority of the Sikhs living in the West Punjab moved to East Punjab in India after the 1947 partition.

Amritsar, Chandigarh airports closed after cross border firing

By Asia Samachar Team | MALAYSIA |

The escalation of tension between India and Pakistan has led to the closure of the Amritsar and Chandigarh airport to civilian air traffic.

This means flights to the Punjab city on the Indian side of the border are likely to be cancelled or diverted.

“We have yet to receive any circulars from the airlines. But surely there will be cancellations,” a Kuala Lumpur based travel agent told Asia Samachar.

Similarly affected are the Leh, Jammu and Srinagar airports, according to Indian media reports.

Airlines from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand have regular scheduled flights to Amritsar.

Jagmeet Singh makes it to Canadian Parliament

Jagmeet Singh wins the Burnaby South parliament seat – Photo: Perso nal Facebook page

Fourteen months after winning the New Democratic Party (NDP) leadership battle, Jagmeet Singh finally lands himself the Canadian parliament.

He won the Burnaby South by-election on Monday (25 Feb 2019), paving the way for him to join his fellow party members in the House of Commons.

The victory also will allow him to ‘regaining his grip’ on the party as well as ensure that he will lead the left-of-centre party in the country’s October federal election, according to Canadian media reports.

“Thank you Burnaby South! I’m determined & ready to fight for the help people need – from the housing crisis to health care not covering everyone the way it should, Canadians deserve better. This isn’t the end of a campaign – it’s the beginning of one. See you in Parliament,” he said in a Facebook entry.

The 39-year old politician won the NDP leadership in October 2017. The victory yesterday would be a breather for Jagmeet as he prepares for his up-coming political battles, both within the party and on the national level.

NDP is Canada’s third largest political party.
