Miri emerged champions of the 5th Borneo Sikh Games that saw 150 participants from five teams compete in the biennial sporting event in East Malaysia and Brunei.

Miri, bearing the red colour, played host to Kuching (green), Brunei (blue), Labuan (white) and Kota Kinabalu (yellow).

The games were jointly organised by Sikh Association Miri and the Brunei Sikh Association from May 15-17.

The games, which began in 2004, is hosted in turn by the five participating teams.

“The games allow jaan pechan (meeting of people)…We are happy with what’s going on, people are making new friends,” Manmohan Singh, the organising committee chairman, tells Asia Samachar.

Miri emerged champions with 24 points, followed by Kuching (21), Brunei (16), Kota Kinabalu (14) and Labuan (12).

Manjit Singh emerged as the best men bowler with 419 pins, while Ranjama Jethi emerged as the women bowler (365). Both are from Miri.

The winning trophy was received jointly by Sikh Association Miri president Narmal Singh and Gurdwara Sahib Miri committee president Gurmukh Singh. Gurmukh was also the Miri team manager.

Sarawak state minister Awang Tengah Ali Hassan came for the closing and prize giving ceremony.

Also present was Federal CID deputy director Amar Singh, who is the current highest ranking Sikh police officer in Malayia.
