The Akaal Premier League (APL) will create history when it kicks off tomorrow (24 Sept 2015) as the first under-13 futsal league for Sikh boys and girls.

Six teams will take part in the inaugural league with matches at Kelab Aman grounds in Kuala Lumpur starting at 8.30am.

The teams are Rawang Akaal Warriors, Beruntung Hill Twin Lions, Titiwangsa Panthers, Iron River Kings FC, Kampung Pandan Lions and Pulapol Eagles.

“More teams wanted to join, but we decided to go with these six teams to let everyone pick up the experience,” said organising team member Jagdev Singh.

APL is oganised by the Akaal Sports Academy (ASA), a sports non-government organistion headquartered at Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Kampung Pandan in Kuala Lumpur.

Basically, the teams represent the gurdwaras for the area which they carry their names. For example, Rawang Akaal Warriors is connected to the Gurdwara Sahib Rawang, Selangor. Iron River Kings FC is the team from Gurdwara Sahib Sungai Besi.

“We are making the teams gurdwara-based to get the wider involvement of the sanggat [congregation],” Jagdev tells Asia Samachar.

Tomorrow, the teams will play two games each. The match format is five-a-side (with two substitutes) playing two halfs of nine minutes each, with a two-minute break.

Among the APL partners are Naam Medic run by Naam Association of Malaysia (medical partner), Sikh Inside as the official photographer and Asia Samachar as the official media. It is supported by Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (SNSM).

ASA was formed in 2010 by a few sports enthusiast. It started by providing training for the Sikh martial art gatka and hockey. Today, it conducts weekly training for fotball, netball, swimming and dhol.
