Shaunvinder Singh is a talented young man. He has represented the Malaysian national cricket team for the under-16 and under-19 teams. He is good at the tabla and the waja (harmonium). And he has been performing well at school.

His talent at cricket was recently recognised when he was named as one of the recipients of the SportsExcel’s Individual Funding 2015.

“It’s an honour to see him selected as one of the recipients,” his father Avtar Singh tells Asia Samachar.

The award came from the Foundation for Malaysian Sporting Excellence funded solely by the private sector. The foundation, chaired by Tunku Imran Jaa’far, has now turned its sights on junior development to ensure that talented Malaysian juniors get the assistance to help them reach their full potential.

Shaunvinder, 18, has been playing cricket since he was seven. He followed the footsteps of his father.

Avtar, who works at the national utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), was a former national cricket player between 1989-1997 and and national junior coach in 1998-2005.

“He has managed to balance his studies and sports. He is also active in the Samelan and gurdwara. My wife and I used to take our kids to the Police Gurdwara Penang for the Friday programmes. I guess they picked up quite a bit from there,” says Avtar.

Shaunvinder studies at Penang Free School, which has been been a Penang state level champion for cricket for 13 years in a row. He was part of the winning team for four years: from From 1 to Form 4.

“They won again this year, but he didn’t play as he wants to concentrate on the SPM exams,” said Avtar.

At the recent Gurdwara Cup, Shaunvinder was selected as the Most Promising Sikh Sportsman 2014.
