Malaysia’s Sanjay Singh Chal became the first Sikh to win a gold medal at the SEA Games 2015 when he came out tops in the men’s individual squash yesterday.
Today, Nauraj Singh Randhawa becomes the second Sikh to win a gold medal, another one for Malaysia, at the Southeast Asian regional games now going on in Singapore.
Not even foot injury could stop Nauraj from retaining the SEA Games men’s high jump gold medal at the National Stadium. [See Nauraj full story here].
Sanjay, the Miri-born 21 year-old, tells Asia Samachar that he was proud to be the first Sikh to deliver the gold in the squash competition.
“The gold will inspire me to train much harder to win my first professional circuit title,” he said.
The top seed Sanjay had no problem overcoming second seed and countryman Mohd Adden Idrakie 11-7, 11-3, 12-10 in the men’s final on June 10.
“It’s a really sweet win and a good boost to my career. What’s not nice is beating my best friend and training partner … I just had to be professional about it,” said the left handed player.
Sanjay, now ranked 115th in the world, aims to break into top 100 of the working rankings by next year. He has yet to win a professional title since turning professional in 2013.
His best achievement in the professional circuit is reaching the final of the Malaysian tour Series No, 4 last month.
But Sanjay was beaten by compatriot Elvinn Keo 5-11, 5-11, 11-7, 3-11 in the final on May 29.
