Gurdwara Sahib Sungai Siput (GSSS) has completed its planned renovation, with the kitchen hall getting its finishing touches this week. The management team led by Harbans Singh is trying to raise RM200,000 for the settle the contractors for the final phase of the work.
“Finally, we have more or less finished the renovation work. I’m so relieved,” GSSS committee president Harbans Singh tells Asia Samachar. “Fund raising has been tough, but the Sanggat has been supportive.”
On Tuesday (22 April 2017), Keshvinder Singh, a special officer of the Perak Chief Minister Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, presented a cheque for RM50,000 from the state government to the gurdwara.
Harbans said he and his team were relieved with the state funding as it helped to part-fund the RM800,000 total renovation cost.
“We have collected RM550,000 from the Sanggat at large and the various gurdwaras. The Sanggat has been very generous. And we are grateful for this funding from the state.
“Now, we are short of RM200,000. The contractors will be making their rounds soon to collect the payments due. We hope we can raise the remaining sum soon. We need the support of the Sanggat,” he said.
The gurdwara underwent a three-phase renovation. Phase one involved the 90-year old kitchen, phase two the granthi quarters and toilets, while phase three involved the langgar hall, guest rooms and classrooms.
