This was announced by Johor Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin at a Vaisakhi function in Johor Bahru on Saturday (29 April 2017).

Gurdwara Sahib Johor Bahru (GSJB), serving the largest Sikh community in the state, will get RM50,000 while the other five gurdwaras in Pontian, Segamat, Kluang, Muar and Batu Pahat – will each received Rm30,000.

The state allocated the Sikh community a 10 acre land four years ago to build a community centre.

“We hope to receive more funding when the state presents its next budget,” GSJB president Manjeet Singh tells Asia Samachar.

FACEBOOK POSTING BY JOHOR MB MOHAMED KHALED NORDIN ON 30 APRIL 2017:

  1. JB Gurdwara MC has received a grant of RM300K as seed money from YAB MB JOHORE to construct a Sikh Community Center to be constructed on the 10 acres land granted four years ago. Now it is for the Sanggat to make the project a reality.
This will need financial resources from individual Sikhs among whom there are many multi millionnairs and also fro other Gurdwaras who have surplus funds idling in banks and earning a measily 3% as interest. The MGCouncil should take the lead and advise these surplus funds Gurdwaras to assist JB GMC to make the Community Center a reality. This is the time for these MG CTEES to change their mindset and go beyond their narrow thinking for the common good of the Sanggat.
Are Sikhs strong and great together or just individually? This is the time to show unity.

  2. Thanks of Sikh Sangat of Johore in particular and Malaysians in general to Johore State Government for its donation of RM300K as announced on 29.4.17 by the YAB MB. The RM300K is for a new Sikh Community Centre to be constructed on a 10 acre land gifted by the State four years ago for this purpose.

The YAB MB further promised that Johore will continue its annual funding for the six gurdwaras in the state as well an education fund. Gurdwara Sahib Johor Bahru (GSJB), serving the largest Sikh community in the state, will get RM50,000 while the other five gurdwaras in Pontian, Segamat, Kluang, Muar and Batu Pahat – will each received Rm30,000. Earlier the Johore State government had allocated RM200,000 + RM400,000 + RM100,000 to be used by Sikh Gurdwaras and Sikh NGOs for Maintenance, Education Centres (PECs) and the proposed crematorium in the State .

Let us hope that the respective GURDWARA MANAGEMENT COMMITTEES will practice the culture of TRANSPARENCY & ACCOUNTABILITY in the case of these funds received from taxpayers’ funds. Other State Governments have also been very generous this Vaisakhi and provided substantial funds to several Gurdwaras and Sikh NGOs for various purposes.

I WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASIZE AGAIN THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SUCH TRUST FUNDS. ASIA SAMACHAR IS THE ONLY SIKH WEBSITE WHICH IS WIDELY FOLLOWED AND CAN BE USED TO PUBLISH THEIR AUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. Many Gurdwaras/religious places.NGOs are known to be susceptible to financial mismanagement and suspected fraud which may be also be due to lack of monitoring and interest by the Sanggat whose members remain silent and thus encourage the continuation of the mismanagement/frauds and lack of any action against those suspected being identified or action taken against resulting in the unhealthy acts continuing and may even be encouraging the acts expanding at other places. NOT A GOOD EXAMPLE OF LEADERSHIP.

Accordingly it is strongly recommended that periodical [say Quarterly] Financial Statements, Progress and Status should be issued and published regarding the manner these funds, including other funds, have been used and managed and thus the Sanggat is in the know instead of restricting information to Committee Members and during Annual General Meetings to registered members.

TRANSPARENCY LEADS TO ACCOUNTABILITY AND ENCOURAGES SANGGAT TO PROVIDE MORE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WHEN REQUIRED AS IT PROVIDES CONFIDENCE IN THE HANDLING OF FINANCES BY THE MANAGEMENT. ASSURANCES THAT THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS HAVE BEEN AUDITED AND THESE HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED TO THE RELEVANT AUTHORITIES MAY NOT PROVIDE THE REQUIRED CONFIDENCE THAT THE FUNDS HAVE BEEN MANAGED WITHOUT ANY POSSIBILITIES OF ‘MISMANAGEMENT-FRAUD-CORRUPTION’ DEALINGS.

The culture of secrecy gives rise to Perception of possible MISMANAGEMENT & FRAUDS.

Please refer to my earlier article on TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN GURDWARAS AND SIKH NGOs FUNDS which was published in ASIA SAMACHAR last year. Sadly little is known about similar donations received earlier by other Sikh NGOs and Gurdwaras in earlier years and there is a common perception that some funds may have been misused by some Committees but the cases are rarely made public to avoid embarrassment to the Sikh community and this is not anyone would want to be publicized.

CHANGE OF MINDSET AND MONITORING OF FUNDS IS CRITICAL BEFORE MISMANAGEMENT AND FRAUD BECOMES REALITY AND THIS MUST START FROM LEADERS FOR PREVENTION.
SANGGAT HAS A ROLE TO PLAY BY DEMANDING TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY OF GURDWARAS FUNDS DURING GURDWARA FUNCTIONS AND NOT JUST WAIT FOR AGMs WHICH MOST MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND WHETHER THEY ARE MEMBERS OR NOT AND ADOPT HANDS OFF ATTITUDE. Thus if there is any misuse of Gurdwara or NGOs funds then the silent majority is not entitled to give any views and thus do not
    deserve any answers.

May Wahe Guru Ji bless all including the many State Governments who are showing their concern by providing annual funds for purposes of Sikh Gurdwaras and Punjabi Education.
