The usually quite Sikh community of Hong Kong came out in full force in a peaceful march yesterday (25 Oct) to protest the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib and the recent heavy handed measures by the authorities in Punjab.

The march, which grabbed the attention of the local media, began from the Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple (KDST), the sole gurdwara in Hong Kong, after an ardaas at 12.30pm.

“We had close to 2,500 people,” an organising team member told Asia Samachar.

A few local television had aired the march yesterday itself, with today’s local newspapers also carrying the report.

The march ended at office of the Consulate General of India in Hong Kong where the local Sikhs leaders presented the memorandum.

Virinder Sharma, consul for pasport, accepted the memorandum handed over by the KDST president Santokh Singh Maluwal who was accompanied by secretary Jujhar Singh and other officials.

Sharma, who reports to consular general Prashant Agrawal, was wearing an orange patka on his head when accepting the memorandum.

The organising team had worked closely with officials from the Hong Kong Police, Happy Valley District, Wan Chai District and the Central District Police Department, according to the same official.
