Ipoh-born Kalwant Singh and five other practising lawyers have been appointed High Court judicial commissioners (JCs) with effect from July 14.
They were among 17 individuals who received their instruments of appointment from Chief Justice of Malaysia Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya on Tuesday. They later took their oaths of office and allegiance before Chief Judge of Malaya Hashim Hamzah.
Kalwant, 60, will serve at the High Court in Muar, Johor.
Kalwant has been in active legal practice since 2000. Over the course of more than two decades, he has built extensive experience in both civil and criminal litigation, having practised in Kuala Lumpur and Perak.
In addition to his litigation practice, he has served as Legal Advisor to the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and has undertaken pro bono legal work for UNHCR Malaysia, reflecting his commitment to public service and access to justice.
He is married to Harshinder Kaur, a legal practitioner based in Kuala Lumpur. He is the son of the late Sujan Singh and Bhagwan Kaur of Ipoh. His parents-in-law were the late Karam Singh Gill of Ampang and Charan Kaur of Bentong.
