Sikh GPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) platform that claims to answer questions based on the “wisdom” of Sikh scripture, remains in an early stage of development.

“Yes, this is an early testing and survey phase,” its promoters told Asia Samachar in an email response to queries after the platform was found to have produced fabricated verses that does not contain in the Guru Granth Sahib.

“We have intentionally kept it open for feedback, which is why our email and contact details are shared, including on Instagram. At this stage, the responses are not positioned as final guidance but as a way to seek direction and correction from knowledgeable and intellectual members of the community,” Sikh GPT founder Navjyot Gurudatta said in the email.

He added: “We are fully aware of the responsibility that comes with working around Sikh teachings. Our intention is very pure — to promote Sikhism in the most accurate and respectful way possible. This is a responsibility we have initiated, but we truly believe it cannot be carried forward alone.

“That is why we are actively seeking guidance from scholars, educators, and intellectual voices. If you would like to be part of this seva, or know someone who can guide us, we would be grateful to connect and share the survey/testing link.”

Asia Samachar reported that a major concern over the use of AI in the religious and spiritual sphere has emerged following the exposure of serious errors and contradictions in the content generated by the AI platform known as “Sikh GPT”.

Available on the App Store and Google Play, “Sikh GPT” presents itself as an AI-based application that claims to provide answers to questions related to Sikhi, Gurbani and related subjects, albeit with disclaimers.

Topping its list of key features are AI-powered tool that allows users to ‘ask questions and receive answers based on the wisdom of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.’

However, multiple responses generated by the platform were found to contain fabricated verses, material presented out of context, and factual inaccuracies, raising serious concerns about its reliability and its potential impact on the correct understanding of Sikhi.

In response, UNITED SIKHS (UK), a charity registered in England and Wales, has formally sought intervention from Sri Akal Takht Sahib through a detailed letter sent on Jan 24.

ChatGPT-type platforms face several primary concerns when discussing religious matters. These include ensuring accuracy in complex and internally diverse traditions, avoiding oversimplification and maintaining neutrality among the existing interpretations. Another key concern is avoiding the appearance of religious authority, since AI is not clergy or a spiritual guide.
