Dhadrianwale slams Akal Takht acting jathedar

By Asia Samachar Team | INDIA |

Beleaguered independent Sikh preacher Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale is not taking the Akal Takht decision against him lying down. A day after its pronouncements, he came out guns blazing.

In a hard-hitting interview, Ranjit stayed defiant even as he faces a possible excommunication order from the Sikh Panth, a fate that fell upon some recent prominent parcharaks (preachers).

In essence, he has alledged that the Amritsar-based Sikh authority had sided with the taksals, a reference to some of the influential Sikh missionary groups, when deciding that he had erred in his his Sikh preaching.

“The jathedars want to stamp their authority by making me appear before them…I want people to start speaking out against this corrupt system,” he told Dainik Savera Jalandhar in an interview. See here or here.

On Monday (24 Aug), Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh announced decisions taken against Ranjit and another popular Sikh preacher Harinder Singh who heads the UK-based Nirvair Khalsa Jatha (NKJ).

Leading a team of panj pyarey, Harpreet said they had received a report from the sub-committee formed earlier to investigate allegations against Ranjit for allegedly distorting religious and historical facts. Ranjit was found guilty and had been asked to come to the Akal Takht to seek forgiveness, or may face further actions.

Harpreet has also asked Sikhs not to listen or share his videos which are widely followed online.

In an entry at the Parmeshar Dwar Gurmat Parchar Sewa Mission Facebook page a day after the decision was announced, Ranjit shared his thoughts on the decision. Three days later, it has already clocked in close to 17,000 views and shared 7,400 times, with more than 2,100 comments. The same video has had more than 178,000 views on the Youtube.

In the interview given a day after the decision was announced, Ranjit alleged that the powers-that-be at the Akal Takht were aligned with the taksals.

“In the past few years, ever since I had dropped the taksal maryada and followed Gurmat, as I understood it, from that day, these people had started their attacks.

“First, there was an attempted murder. When that failed, they started hurling allegations that I’m a ‘Guru dookhi’; that I’m preaching against Guru Sahib and the Darbar Sahib. They started peddling those lies. And they have achieved some success,” he said.

He believed those ‘lies’ thrown played a role in the Akal Takht decision taken against him.

In the interview, he was asked why not willing to face the committee set-up by the Akal Takht and why he insisted on appearing in an open platform.

“There is the Akal Takht and the Sri Darbar Sahib. Then we have the parbandhaks (management team), the Jathedars. There is the system. Let’s not mix them up.

“When we think of Akal Takht and the Darbar Sahib, Guru Hargobind abd Guru Amar Das come to mind. When we think of the parbandhaks, the Jathedars come into the picture,” he said, adding that the ‘system is corrupted’.

But why the insistence in wanting to appear in an open platform? He said that was because they first spoke on the issues in open platforms.

“Since they’ve been making open allegations for the last four years, I’m asking to come to an open platform and state where I’ve gone wrong in my Sikhi preaching.

“They are saying that I’m at loggerheads with the Akal Takht. My issue is with the Jathedars, not the Akal Takht. We have to separate the two,” he said.

Ranjit cited an example of the Akal Takht decision in September 2015 to forgive Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh for his alleged blasphemy. One month later, the then Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh was forced to revoke the forgiveness due to the immense pressure from Sikhs.

“When Akal Takht Jathedars gave their pronouncement on the Sirsa Baba, many didn’t agree. Many disagreed with the Jathedars to forgive the Sirsawala. They were not against the Akal Takht, but with the decision of the Jathedars. Same here,” he said.

In 2017, the controversial godman – who headed a Haryana-based deraa wielding considerable political clout and financial muscle – was handed a 20 year jail term for raping two women followers in 2002.

When pressed on why he did not appear before the jathedars, Ranjit said he could have done it to get a ‘clean sheet’ for himself and his organisation Parmeshar Dwar.

“The jathedars want to stamp their authority by making me appear before them…I want people to start speaking out against this corrupt system,” he said.

He then repeated allegations that the jathedars were biased and were doing the bidding of their leaders.

He added in the last few decades, none of the babas who belittled Sikhi were ever excommunicated from the Sikh Panth. “They do so on those who questioned them,” he said.

Ranjit said while jathedars had decided that some of his statements went against Gurmat, they have yet to take actions against preachers who were preaching stuff that flies in the face of Gurmat.

“Is sacrificing slaughtered goats as per Gurmat? What about applying the tilak? What about bowing before the babas? What about doing (physical) aarti? There are so many types of maryada, and they give amrit (amrit shaknaa) as per their own ways. Are all these aligned with Gurmat?

“The Jathedars are silent on these matters. But why Dhadrianwale is a pain in the neck? It’s simply because he does not bow down to the taksal….One phone call to  them [the taksals] and the matter can be resolved,” he said.

So, what is the underlying issue of this tussle?

“They are not allowing others to the right to live. We want to motivate people. We love the Guru Granth Sahib. My method may be different. I use logic, I use practical arguments that jive with the youth of today. Let me do it my way. On the other side, they can do it their way,” he said.

He also suggested that the acting jathedar may have taken the drastic measure to ensure that he is gets confirmation as the Akal Takht jathedar.

The interview can be seen at Dainik Savera Jalandhar’s Facebook (here) or Youtube (here)

“Hey! That’s you and me every morning!”

Sketch from Fauja Singh Keeps Going

By Simran Jeet Singh | UNITED STATES |

When my 3-year-old daughter first saw this image from our new book, Fauja Singh Keeps Going, she squealed with joy: “Hey! That’s you and me every morning!” My heart melted. I had dreamed of this moment my whole life. This is what we mean when we say that representation matters.

Seeing people she loved as positive characters in a picture book confirmed for me what I had felt growing up. Representation also matters for marginalized folks because it can counter the negative messages all around us.

At a time when hate has been normalized and our children are susceptible to its toxicity, I can’t put explain how it feels to offer a story that instills compassion and understanding for those who seem most different from us.

The God of Agendas

0
Iqbal Singh attending the Ayodhya mandir foundation stone laying event on 5 Aug 2020. Inserts: (Left to right, clockwise) Iqbal when talking to media, aarti pooja at Patna Sahib, Indian PM Narendra Modi speaking at Ayodhya and slaughter of goat at Patna Sahib
By Karminder Singh Dhillon | OPINION |

Agenda is the new god of religion in the world we live in. It’s a god whose existance requires the Creation of truths where none exist. It’s a god whose worship requires the Sustenance of rewriting history. It’s a god who seeks to Destruct all those who do not submit.

Every idea, action and event that counts as religious must fit into the Agenda.

The foundation stone laying event at Ayodhya on August 5th was no exception. The prime minister of a 1.2 billion secular nation prostrated to his Agenda god in clear and succinct language when he said in his public address:

“From Somnath to Kashi Vishwanath, from Bodh Gaya to Sarnath, from Amritsar to Patna Sahib, from Lakshadweep to Leh, the entire of India is Ram Maya.” In real terms what this head of state made clear was that the Agenda god of his religion comes complete with its trinity too: Conquest, Subjugation and Assimilation. He continued: “There is Kamban Ramayana in Tamil; and Kumudendu Ramayana in Tamil, Oriya, and Kannada. If we go to Kashmir, there is Ramavatarcharit, Ramcharitam in Malayalam, Krittivasi Ramayana in Bengali, Guru Gobind Singh himself wrote Gobind Ramayana.”

One could be excused for wondering if these were the words of a head of state or a high priest. So great is the love and devotion towards the agenda that conjuring up historical facts pertaining to others and for others appears to have become the pooja of the poojari in chief.

OUR OWN POOJARIS

The Dalai Lama turned down the invite to be present. He is a man of wisdom. He surely had not forgotten what he had said at the height of the dispute: that the clashes over Ayodhya “caused me deep personal anguish.” He said that he considered the row as “an aberration” and he believed that “the issue could be resolved through mutual trust, mutual faith and mutual respect. If he attended, he would not only be standing over the rubble of a destroyed Masjid, but on the ashes of his own convictions.

The Christian, Muslim and Jaini leaders were nowhere to be found. If nothing else, the COVID-19 pandemic could have acted as a polite excuse to stay away from an event that celebrated the destruction of one place of worship to build another. The 22-kilogram silver foundation brick notwithstanding.

But the logic-defying, position grabbing, and sacked polygamist former jathedar of Takhat Patna, Iqbal Singh found it fit to make his presence felt – and heard. He had acted as a high priest of his own Agenda god for a good 35 years. He has pursued his agenda of proving that Sikhs are Hindus, that Sikh Gurus worshipped Hindu gods and goddesses, that Sikhism was a mere offshoot of Hinduism, the sahibzadey were reincarnations of Hindu gods, and the Sri Guru Granth Sahib was no more than an exegesis of ancient Hindu scriptures.

For 35 years as jathedar of Patna, he had taken pains to ensure the Takhat was indistinguishable from a mandir. He installed the Bachittar Natak in the sanctum sanctorum of the Takhat. He ensured a goat was slaughtered publicly, cooked and consumed daily by the poojaris under his control. And its blood applied as a tilak to the cache of weapons kept at the Takhat. He conducted arti pooja on a daily basis. And he issued nonsense filled statements on a regular basis.

What we had in Iqbal Singh was a rogue agenda dressed in the finery of a conviction; supported by the venality of the ruling class; and allowed to persist by the corrupt and decadent Sikh leadership at the SGPC and Akal Takhat. His agenda was paid for by the millions of gullible and credulous Sikhs all over the world who visited the personal shrine that this man had made the Takhat to be. These millions handed him the legitimacy for his agenda on a silver platter in the form of huge regular attendances and ever larger collections.

So why would Iqbal Singh want to give Ayodhya a miss. It was his best opportunity to further his agenda. And that he did without missing a heartbeat.

While the mandirs of Ayodhya were undertaking the akhand paths of the Ramayan; Ayodhya’s Gurdwara Brahamkund Sahib – at the behest of Iqbal Singh – decided to undertake the ritual of an akhand path of the Guru Granth Sahib to express gratitude for the construction of the temple. Iqbal Singh showed up to perform the ardas during the bhog of akhand path before proceeding to the mandir site.

At Ayodhya he declared that Sikh Gurus were descendants of Luv and Kush – the sons of Ram and Sita. In one sweeping concocted lie, he had ingratiated himself to his masters. In one move, he had plugged his ??? Koor agenda into the larger umbrella one. Much like emptying his trash can into the bigger dumpster.

The stench of Iqbal Singh’s own trash blinded him to the shenanigans of inviting a Sikh leader to be present at the Ayodhya event. The event was a blatant attempt to sour Sikh – Muslim relations, a chance to show that Sikhs were part of the Hindu fold, and a sham attempt to show that the mandir construction had widespread acceptance amongst other faiths in India. But all of these were of no concern to Iqbal. It was of no concern to him that Sikhs themselves had suffered the humiliation of the destruction of their places of worship – the Darbar Sahib and Akal Takhat in 1984; and that Sikhs could never support the act of constructing places of worship by destroying those of other faiths.

It was of no concern to him that the court decision on Ayodhya had made a mockery of Sikhs, their Gurus and their religions. Pages 63,64 and 65 of the Addenda to the judgement recorded as “facts” deduced from testimony of “experts” that (i) Guru Nanak sought “darshan” of Ram Chander’s birth place at Ayodhya. (2) Guru Nanak got an “appearance of God” which prepared him to go see Ram Chander’s birth place and 3) Guru Teg Bahadur and Guru Gobind Singh ji also sought “darshan” of Ram Chander at his “birth place” at Ayodhya.

One Hindu commentator put it succinctly: “it was almost asif Gurus Nanak, Teg Bahadur and Gobind Singh had come back from the beyond to give testimony on behalf of Ram Chander to the 5 judges hearing the Ayodhya case.”

Some Sikhs may have taken solace in the fact that at least the Akal Takhat and SGPC leaders of the Sikhs chose not to attend. But the solace is as hollow as the three claims made in the judgement. True, the acting jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Harpreet Singh chose not to attend. But he has shown moral timidity in not stating publicly his reason for staying away. A truth that goes un-uttered in a timely basis is a worthless truth – akin to the barking of a guard dog after the thieves have left with the loot.

The Hindustan Times, on 4th August carried this report about Harpreet Singh. When asked if he would be attending the event on August 5, the jathedar said, “I have not read the invitation.” When told that the contents of the invitation had been published in the newspapers, he said, “I have not read the newspapers.” At the time of this writing, the jathedar has yet to say anything regarding Iqbal Singh’s attendance and actions.

Sikhs need to understand that truths are never invented to serve agendas, but that truths liberate us from them. Sikhs will never be able to move forward while stuck in backward agendas of the Iqbal Singh type. So what is the truth?

THE TRUTH IS COMMON SENSE

That Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists are Hindu just because they are descendants of the Indus is indeed the hogwash argument that is presented by the by BJP, Shiv Sena and RSS.

The same defective argument is applied by some skewed Jews who claim Christians and Muslims are breakaway or deviant Jews because they descended from the same civilization. Civilization and spirituality are not to be confused. Every prophet was born into an existing religion. Christ into a Jewish family. Buddha and Guru Nanak into Hindu families, Mohamed into an animist one. But they exited their inherited belief systems and started new and independent paths.

Just like every child is born of a mother. But the child is distinct and possesses a separate identity from the mother from the moment of birth. Only a puerile person would argue that we need to go to the mother to take her vital signs whenever the child needs treatment.

Sikhs are not Hindus. And our Gurus did not descend from mythological figures. Those who continue to propogate such humbug are the poojaris of the god of their Agendas.

Historical Sikh manuscript recreated in 3D as part of a digital museum exhibit

By Asha Patel | BRITAIN | LEICESTER MERCURY |

A historical manuscript dating back to the early 19th century has been recreated using the ground-breaking 3d technology.

The manuscript has been part of the University of Leicester collection since the early 19th century when it was donated by a collector Harry Hardy Peach (1874-1936).

In a unique project undertaken by the Leicester-based Sikh Museum Initiative, the manuscript, which was taken from a battle between the Sikh Empire and the British East India Trading Company in 1845 has been recreated as a 3D animation.

The Battle of Ferozeshah in Punjab, India in 1845, was one of series of battles within the Anglo-Sikh wars that took place at the time.

Within the manuscript are elements from Sikh scriptures including the Guru Granth Sahib which is the most central scriptures within the Sikh faith.

Sikh historian and Director of the initiative, Gurinder Mann Singh told LeicestershireLive: “I came across the manuscript listed in the university’s collections back in 2013 which was when it all kicked off.”

Taran Singh is the artist and developer behind the 3D model which will be revealed online today (25 August) following a free webinar about the history behind the project.

He said: “It was wonderful to be able to see the final model come together and the animation gave it a whole new level of interactions that would not be possible in a traditional museum setting.”

Another Indian goes on trial for spying on Sikhs, Kashmiris in Germany – Report

1
By Asia Samachar Team | EUROPE |

Germany is set to witness yet another case of an Indian national accused of spying on Sikh and Kashmiri communities.

An Indian national accused of spying on Sikh and Kashmiri communities in Germany for New Delhi’s secret services went on trial in Frankfurt on Tuesday (25 Aug), reports AFP.

The suspect, identified as 54-year-old Balvir S., is accused of working for the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s foreign intelligence agency, from at least January 2015.

The report said prosecutors say he “obtained information about figures in the Sikh opposition scene and the Kashmiri movement and their relatives in Germany, and passed this on to his handlers who were working at the Indian consulate general in Frankfurt”.

A total of 10 hearings before the regional superior court are scheduled, with the trial due to conclude on October 29.

This is not the first such case. In December 2019), a German court sentenced a married Indian couple living in Moenchengladbach after they admitted to spying on Sikhs and Kashmiris for the Indian secret service.

Manmohan S. was handed a suspended prison sentence of 18 months for acting as a foreign intelligence agent, while his wife Kanwal Jit K. was fined 180 days’ wages for aiding him, according to an earlier AFP report.

Frankfurt is of particular interest to the Indian secret services because western Germany is home to the largest Sikh community in the country, estimated at between 10,000 and 20,000 people, and one of the largest in Europe, the latest report added.

Loveleen Kaur Walia’s red kebaya certainly stole the show at the opening of Singapore’s 14th Parliament yesterday (25 Aug).

She accompanied her husband and the new Opposition Leader Pritam Singh at its opening.

The photo taken by Jeremy Long, a senior visual journalist at Channel News Asia (CNA), captures the couple’s stunning entry. See here.

All the 92 newly elected members of parliament were sworn in along with the re-election of the Tan Chuan-Jin as the speaker and Indranee Rajah as the new Leader of the House.

The Workers’ Party (WP) achieved its biggest yet showing in the republic’s general election when it won 10 seats. As expected, People’s Action Party (PAP) was returned to power comfortably , winning 83 seats.

In his maiden speech, Pritam underlined the importance to explore ways to demystify the work of Parliament and to better enable Singaporeans to appreciate law-making and debates on policy imperatives and trade-offs.

“Parliament’s direct and indirect impact on each and every Singaporean and our businesses are massive, and it is only appropriate that we amplify the choices, and the reasons behind the decisions made or not made in Parliament more widely,” he said.

He reiterated a ppoint he made at the 2016 Parliament opening as to ‘tremendous scope’ available to Parliament, especially through the select committees, to make ‘our politics more accountable and better accessible to all Singaporeans’.
