Capt Bagawan a ‘God-send’ for aviators, says Malaysian newspaper

Capt Bagawan Singh

Like a God-send, Captain Bagawan Singh emerged from scratch to serve the nation in various capacities. Even his name (Bagawan – Hindi for God) speaks loudly about his achievements and contributions.

He not only helped keep the nation’s sovereignty intact but also helped bolster the country’s aviation industry.

Bagawan, who turned 60 on Feb 28, has trained dozens of pilots for the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and the corporate world, and helped establish helicopter companies for wealthy businessmen, reports New Straits Times.

He went a step further nine years ago, to establish his own helicopter company — Helistar Resources Sdn Bhd at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Selangor.

After his stint with the air force, Bagawan told the newspaper that the knowledge and skills acquired came in handy later on when he was able to establish aviation wings for corporate companies. These include Mofaz Air, Helitrade Sdn Bhd, Innovest Aviation and Management Services Sdn and Weststar Aviation Services Sdn Bhd.

Recalling his early days, he told the newspaper that he was initially trained to fly the fixed-wing Bulldog B102 at RMAF Alor Star, in 1977, before advanced training on the Alouette III helicopter at RMAF Kluang, Johor. He later flew Alouette III and Sikorsky S-61A4 Nuri helicopters operationally for the RMAF and also trained young pilots.

Apart from flying, Bagawan had also captained the RMAF hockey team. Later he managed the RMAF and Armed Forces hockey teams.

In civilian life from 1993 onwards, he flew an assortment of helicopters, including Bell variants (206 BIII, 206 LIII, 206 LIV and Bell 407), AS350Bs, AS365Ns and EC120Bs.

In 2004, Bagawan’s family immigrated to New Zealand to cater for their children’s tertiary studies. But he remained in the country to keep his career and business afloat.

Today, Helistar has undertaken a multitude of missions from chartered flights to resorts, surveillance for plantations and timber, disaster relief operations and even filming of Hollywood and Bollywood movies.

“It has been a long and arduous journey. But the blood, sweat and tears have eventually paid off. I started my company with just one helicopter. Today, we operate four helicopters and have a dedicated team of pilots and crew,” the veteran, who served the RMAF for 15 years, told the newspaper.

Bagawan has seen it all in his four decades as a helicopter pilot, clocking tens of thousands of flight hours. He saw action during the communist insurgency, assisted in natural disasters and humanitarian missions, carried surveillance for the authorities, done timber screening for logging companies and flown charter flights for corporate clients, the report added.

In response to the story, Asia Samachar received a note from Major (Rtd) Suwaran Sikh Dhillon, a retired Malaysian defence personel, who had the chance of meeting Capt Bagawan in 1991 when the former was posted at the RMAF Kinrara.

“I was posted there as AC (Rank of Private in RMAF). This “God Sent Man” motivated me to join Officer’s Corp. By then I had already signed my GA (General Application) to join as RMAF Commissioned Officer.

“In Oct 1991, after an atending an interview under his guidance I was successfully choosen to join RMAF Cadet School as Officer Cadet at RMAF Subang where Capt Saab was an Instructor. I was trained under his leadership for about 6 months (He left Service by then). I was commissioned as 2nd Lt RMAF on 13 Oct 1992 and remained in RMAF till I took optional retirement in April 2014 (Last Rank as Major RMAF). Very greatfull to this gentleman who had inspired me and changed my journey in RMAF. Thank You Sir.”

Capt Bagawan will be joining the Mega Gathering of Malaysia Singapore Punjabi Automotive 2018, a get-together of Punjabi automotive enthusiasts from Malaysia and Singapore at Khalsa Land at Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor, on 18 Aug 2018. See here.

Sikh man attacked in ‘despicable hate crime’ in California says ‘turban saved’ him – Report

A Sikh man who was recently attacked while putting up political campaign signs in California said his turban “saved him” from further injury.

Surjit Singh Malhi, who has been living in Stanislaus County, California for decades, said two assailants told him “go back to your country” as they attacked him near the intersection of two roads, reports The Independent.

Malhi was putting out signs for Jeff Denham, a Republican congressman running for re-election, when he said the assailants approached him and threw sand in his eyes before physically attacking him. He noted the attackers were male and wearing black sweatshirts.

“My turban saved me, maybe if I don’t have a turban… the way they were hitting me… maybe I would die,” he told NBC.

Law enforcement officials are investigating the incident as a hate crime. Mr Malhi’s truck had been spray painted with a white nationalist symbol and “go back to your country” written on it, according to the report.

“It’s a despicable hate crime,” said Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson to the New York Times. “There is no room for this in Stanislaus County or anywhere else in the United States of America.”

A woman named Casey Joyce Musgrave, who explained that Mr Malhi is the father of her best friend, shared a photo of his truck with the obscenities spray painted on it in a post published to Facebook.

“Just so everyone knows, violent acts of racism are happening in your area,” Ms Musgrave wrote.

Mr Malhi told NBC that he has a supportive community of friends in Stanislaus County. A group of people from a CrossFit gym he belongs to rallied together to Mr Malhi’s home to show their support and to help clean the spray paint off his truck.

Below is a statement from the American Sikh Council on the incident:

PRESS RELEASE | August 7, 2018 |

The American Sikh Council (ASC) is alarmed at the continued spate of violence perpetrated against Americans of the Sikh Faith.  On the evening of July 31, 2018 Surjit Singh (Malhi) a 50 year old local community activist had just finished putting up campaign signs in support of Republican Representative Jeff Denham, outside Keyes, California, when he found two young men waiting for him as he returned to his truck.

According to news reports; “As soon as I saw them they threw sand in my eyes,” Malhi said. The 50-year-old stated that the two men beat him over the head, across the shoulders and neck, while shouting “Go back to your own country!”

He is recovering after he was viciously beaten in an attack by two white men who yelled racial insults and told him, “go back to your own country.” The criminals also vandalized his truck, spray-painting it with the same hateful words, with a Celtic cross.

The Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson told the local newspapers that the sheriff’s office is investigating the assault as a hate crime.

Sheriff Christianson stated, “This is a random despicable criminal act against a member of the Sikh community.”

It is heartening to see that the police authorities are taking this incident very seriously and calling it exactly what it is, ‘ a hate crime’!

Furthermore the immediate local community and neighbors have responded very graciously and joined Surjit Singh (Malhi) and his family at their home in solidarity and claim him as one of their own. The members of local community even cleaned up the spray painted obnoxious graffiti off his pickup truck.

A few days after the above incident, a 71 year Sikh American man was kicked to the ground repeatedly while taking a walk around a Manteca park.

The Manteca incident, captured on video, occurred around 6 a.m. on Monday August 6, 2018. The video show the victim was at Graystone Park when two male adults confronted him on the sidewalk along Turquoise Way. The video, released by the Manteca Police Department, shows the man walking onto the street to go around the men, but they follow him.

According to news reports, one of the men kicked the victim several times and spat on him. When the victim fell to the ground, his turban fell off and he struck his head. He got back up to defend himself, only to be kicked down again. His attackers left on foot, but one returned and kicked him several times as he lay on the ground.

According to the Modesto Bee, “As the suspects left the scene, it is believed that one may have waved a firearm in the air,” the news release said. “The elderly man was medically treated and released from a local hospital.”

The incident is being investigated as an attempted robbery, Manteca police said. “Based upon the information we have received at this time, there are no indications that this assault was a hate crime.”

The vast majority of ordinary Sikh American citizens are constantly targeted for their distinguished religious attire by some deranged members of the public, starting from elementary schools, to workplaces and in all public spaces.

Since 9/11, Sikh Americans have spent tens of millions of dollars in trying to educate the general public about the unique ‘Sikh turban’ and its relevance to all practicing Sikhs. Information about anyone or anything is just a click away on the ubiquitous cell phone and other internet gadgets. Therefore, not all hate crimes are being committed due to ignorance but with full knowledge.

According to CNN, racial/ethnic/religious bias does not only happen because of unfamiliarity but in many cases due to the following four reasons: thrill-seeking, defensive, retaliatory and mission-offenders.

It is for these and other reasons that six million Jews were exterminated by the German regime during World War II and later hundreds of thousands of Sikhs were ethnically cleansed by the Indian regime in Punjab and elsewhere from 1984 – 1998. www.thirdsikhgenocide.org

Day 04: What is the meaning of the word ‘sachiaar’?

2
By Surinder Kaur Sohan Singh | SIKHI STUDY | OPINION

How can I become sachiaar? The root word of sachiaar is SACH. SACH means TRUTH. In Gurbani, when the word SACH is used, it refers ONLY to GOD. The existence of GOD is the ONLY TRUTH of the whole Universe.

What is KOOR? Everything created by GOD falls in the category of KOOR. Therefore the whole of Creation is KOOR. The literal meaning of KOOR is rubbish / something that has little value / impermanent.

Why is Guruji calling the whole Creation of GOD as KOOR?

KOOR here refers to anything with a temporary existence. It is time-bound. It exists for a limited period of time and then gets destroyed.

The whole of Creation falls into this category and its existence is only temporary. The only ONE who is out of this category is GOD. Therefore HE is the only ONE who lives forever.

How do I become SACHIAAR ?

Human beings are the only species in GOD’s creation that has been blessed with a discerning mind and therefore given a CHOICE. We are made up of two parts: 1) Physical Body, 2) Jyot.

Our physical body is part of the Creation and therefore it is temporary. One day it will die and disappear from the face of the Earth.

Jyot: This is the spark of GOD in us. This is the part of us that lives forever.

The choice GOD has given us is: Remain connected only to your physical body and get destroyed with time; or, build that connection with the TRUTH inside you and get the chance to live forever.

How do I become SACHIAAR?

I become sachiaar when I recognise which part of me is KOOR and which part of me is the REALITY that lives forever. When this realisation comes to me and I begin my journey to connect with the TRUTH inside me, then I am on my way to becoming a sachiaar.

Gobind to request for federal funding for Jalan Loke Yew crematorium

Minister Gobind Singh Deo and the architects of the new complex for Jalan Loke Yew crematorium in Kuala Lumpur – Photo: Gobind Singh Deo Facebook page

Minister of Communication and Multimedia Gobind Singh Deo has pledged RM10,000 from his personal allocation to the construction of a funeral parlour project in the city.

He said he will raise the matter with the federal government to provide financial assistance to the Shamshan Bhoomi Parbandak Society (Selangor & Federal Territory), for the makeover of the century-old Jalan Loke Yew crematorium in Kuala Lumpur.

At the ground-breaking ceremony of the project today, Gobind, who is also Puchong MP, said he had received a letter from the society requesting for donations for the project.

“I have forwarded the letter to the government. I hope I can come up with a figure, which matches if not exceeds what you have (raised),” he said in response to the RM500,000 donations pledged by the Shree Lakshmi Narayanan Temple management.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by the society in land ownership and fund for the construction, Gobind said it is not easy to successfully complete such projects.

“I can now say, (that) from my personal allocation as a Minister, I am prepared to put down RM10,000 for a start. I will also speak to the Prime Minister  whether we can get the Federal Government to make the pledge to assist this project substantially,” Gobind said.

He also reminded the people that projects like these are a collective responsibility, without which the civil societies or community groups would not be able to succeed in its works to serve the people.

“As I said earlier, in life we go through stages, and at the end of the day when we reach our time, then of course, its places like this that send us off. So let us remember that we all have to put our hands together to make this project a success.”

Commending the society for its efforts to start the project, he also thanked it for giving him the honour to officiate the ground breaking ceremony. – Extracted from Gobind Singh Deo Facebook page
