Future of Sikhi in Punjab

The world’s fourth largest church is being constructed in Jalandhar at a cost of about Rs 2,000 Crores. When this grand church is thrown open to the public, lakhs of Christians from all over India – and thousands from several foreign countries – will start coming to Jalandhar to visit the magnificent church. I wonder how our religious leaders like the Akal Takhat Jathedar and the Shiromani Gurdwara Perbandhak Committee (SGPC) President, and political leaders like Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal will feel at that time!

The Christian population of Punjab in 2011 was 3,48,230 which was 1.26 percent of the state’s population. Strangely, at 2.18 percent, the Christian population was second highest percentage-wise in Amritsar district. It is really ironic that Christians were in such large numbers in a district where premier Sikh institutions like Akal Takhat, SGPC, and Chief Khalsa Dewan are located. Since then, Amritsar district’s Christian population has increased phenomenally (there are about 700 churches now in Amritsar district alone).

FOR MORE ON SPREAD OF CHRISTIANITY IN PUNJAB, CLICK HERE

Lakhs of Christians had assembled in Amritsar on 5th July 2022 for a huge event called ‘Amritsar Crusade’ which was organised by Ankur Narula Ministries. Many Sikhs had expressed their strong views on social media about this enormous gathering of Christians in Amritsar which is undoubtedly the spiritual and political heartland of Sikhi. Sometime earlier, a mammoth Christian event was held in Gurdaspur on 31st May 2022 where about 5 lakhs Christians had participated.

Punjab-based Christian missionaries are working on a war footing for their long term goal of turning Punjab into a Christian majority state, and Punjab is definitely moving speedily in that direction. While their population is increasing on a daily basis, it seems that Akal Takhat and SGPC, our most important religious institutions, have not fully woken up from their slumber so far.

In today’s Punjab, it’s Chardi Kalaa for Christians and Dhendi Kalaa for Sikhs. If not in our own life-time then in the life-time of our next generation, Punjab can certainly become a Christian majority state.

The Istri Satsang of Gurdwara Sahib Seremban came together in full force to prepare methiya (sweets) in conjunction with Parkash Dihara of Guru Granth Sahib.

The Parkash Dihara (literally installation day) refers to the incident when the Pothee Sahib (as the Granth Sahib was called then) was completed by Guru Arjun Dev Ji at Ramsar and installed for the first time at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Baba Budha Ji was installed the first Granthee (minister of the Granth). Guru Arjun Dev paid obeisance (matha tekna) and the Pothee became a permanent feature of Sikh diwans from then on. Musings: Punjab then and now

Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Maan shares a photo on social media of him opening a AAM clinic

By Prabhjot Singh | Opinion |

Change is the only thing that is permanent. This has been my philosophy throughout. Other day Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched with great fanfare the Aam Aadmi Clinic.

It leaves me wondering if it is all we have achieved in 75 years of Independence. Vivid are memories when as a child, 60 years ago, I occasionally visited the local dispensary primarily for medical attention.

I am not sure whether it was a municipal dispensary or a primary health centre run by the State Health department. It had all the facilities that the Aam Aadmi party clinics are promising to have.

Besides a doctor, the dispensary had a nurse, a midwife, a pharmacist and an attendant besides a safai karamchari. All basic needs of people of our locality – model town – were met by the dispensary.

As I grew older, the dispensary started losing its usefulness. Sometimes it was either without a doctor or a nurse, or both. Drugs were either scarce or there were no replenishments. Routine tests, including the Malaria test, too, were discontinued.

As the country started enjoying fruits of independence, services became the first casualty. For people belonging to my generation, “services”, including health care, education, streetlights, garbage collection and disposal, local transportation and maintenance of parks and open spaces were all “Sarkari”.

It sounds amazing to hear the State Chief Minister talking of making primary health centres and government schools as prime institutions to meet growing needs of the people.

I went to a Government Model School in my area. Teaching of English with Punjabi or Hindi started from Lower KinderGarten (LKG) class.

BHAGWANT SINGH MANN FACEBOOK ENTRY (16 AUG 2022):

In 1968 when I sat in the Middle Standard Examination conducted by the District Education Office, my school had the District topper while I also figured among top 50 students of the district.

Even after securing high first division – 484 marks out of 700 – it was a tough competition to get into another “Sarkari” school, Government Model High School, Cemetery Road.

Two years later when the Matriculation Examination was conducted by the Punjab School Education Board for the first time, my school had the state topper. Incidentally, he was the same boy who had topped the Middle standard exam. I was once again among the top 100 students of the state.

Those were the days when Government schools produced the toppers. The “sarkari” dispensaries san picture of the Chief Minister, provided free basic treatment. Now after 60 years, the Chief Minister’s assertion that the government was committed to rejuvenate the health care and education system in the state left me wondering whether we were moving forward or going back.

Who has been at fault for the present plight of basic services that the state was mandated to provide?

Of course people have been electing their governments!

King turned to Beggar

0

By Bhupinder Singh

King turned to beggar. These are the words from Sri Guru Granth sahib (SGGS). I had always wondered that I have never seen that reality take place in real life. I knew in my heart that if the words have been said by Guru Ji and written by them, then there is no veracity of their not being the true. But then in my heart I was wondering if that happens, how the reality unfolds. The recent happening in Sri Lanka looked to me like a classic unfolding of such a scenario. The President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was forced to flee the nation roiled by riots as a result of economic meltdown, from a very high inflation rates and acute fuel shortages.

So, let us first try to briefly understand what happened in Sri Lanka:

  • The Covid-19 pandemic resulting lockdown had severely impacted the economic wellbeing of the nation so dependent on the tourist flow, which fueled its economy.
  • The country was facing severe fuel shortages with low foreign exchange reserves could not pay for its import. It was affecting the economy, as that was resulting in food shortages and also fueling price increases all around. This was making life difficult, and citizens were pointing fingers at the leaders for the mess.
  • The citizens were so dissatisfied with the government that a large-scale peaceful protest had started across the nation.
  • The economic crisis intensified in May 2022, because of fuel shortages and high food prices had severely undermined the quality of life.
  • Lately, the cost of food, of cooking gas, of clothes, transport, and even what electricity the state will allow you to have, had sky-rocketed so egregiously that it created a backlash against the government. Along with price increases the nation’s currency rupee’s value plummeted significantly.
  • President Rajapaksa’s two brothers Finance Minister Basil and Prime Minister Mahinda, resigned in April and May, respectively, bowing to public pressure and anger.
  • Still the President was defiant, not in a mood to yield to public pressure. He was becoming isolated, his support dwindling, and he was staying sequestered in his palace alone for weeks.
  • With erosion to his support his isolation was increasing day by day. He was even becoming increasingly distrustful of his own military commanders and fearful of his own safety.
  • On July 9, thousands descended in Colombo demanding the President’s resignation. The situation was so charged that the President was put on a warship by the military for his own safety.
  • The extraordinary events of the Saturday appeared to be the culmination of months of peaceful protests in Sri Lanka.
  • The protesting citizens had occupied the Presidential Palace, vowing to vacate only on the resignation of the President.
  • Even the current Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence was also set on fire.
  • There was no word from the President, not even a statement, nor his whereabouts were known to the media.
  • Finally, the Speaker of the parliament, made a statement that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said that he would step down on July 13.
  • However, in the early hours of July 13, he boarded a military aircraft bound for Maldives with his wife and two bodyguards.
  • Maldivians woke up to a surprise news of President Rajapaksa there in the capital Male, sparking a fierce backlash as the Maldives government was accused of helping a disgraced leader escape justice.
  • Rajapaksa was forced to flee to Singapore right away. It was from there that he emailed his resignation latter, sensing that that he had no other option left.
  • Even in Singapore he had just been granted permission for a private visit.

So, we find that head of the nation — considered as most powerful — had become a liability in his own country and was forced to flee but has to beg for permission to stay outside. The palace had been breached by the popular unrest in the nation, and President (king in earlier times) had been checkmated. This unfolding of the fate of the head of the nation appeared to me to a modern-day example of Guru Ji’s words:

ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਰਾਜੁ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਤੇ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ॥

“Bhekhaaree te raaj karaavai raajaa te bhekhaaree.”  (SGGS, 1252)

Translation: The beggar is transformed into a king, and the king into a beggar.

We saw a king had been turned to a beggar. This was not just an unceremonious fall from grace for President Gotabaya alone, but for his siblings and the powerful clan of Rajapaksas, which had dominated the political landscape for decades. Earlier his older brother Mahinda was the President from 2005 to 2015 and was the Prime Minister from 2019 -2022. The bust of father of the three brothers was toppled by the masses during the violent demonstrations in Hambantota, reminding us that how once venerable was biting dust.

Now let us look at the earlier line of the shabad quoted above, where it was shared that the mortals are exalted to occupy the crown in these words:

ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਕਾਸਿ ਚਢਾਵੈ ਚਢੇ ਅਕਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

“Dharatee te aakaas chaddaavai chadde akaas giraavai. 2.” (SGGS, 1252)

Translation: From the earth, the mortal is exalted to the ethers (Seventh Sky); and from the ethers on high, he is thrown down again. ||2||

When one is elevated from dust and handed a crown, the feeling invincibility takes birth. One start feeling that one can do no wrong or do any harm and get away with anything. The general tendency grips to usurp more power and control, becoming more autocratic. It makes us forget that we are not going to remain here forever. Guru Ji has warned us in these words:

ਰਾਜੇ ਰਾਇ ਰੰਕ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਣਾ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ॥

“Raaje rai ra(n)k nahee rahanaa aai jai jug chaare.” (SGGS, 929)

Translation: The ruling kings and the paupers shall not remain; they come and go, throughout the four ages.

The words used in Gurbani are Raaja meaning king, who were the leaders of the countries then, but today we have Presidents and Prime Ministers as heads of nations, but the truth Guru Ji has shared is still valid. We still see that many leaders act in manners as if they are invincible, occupying throne forever. It is easy to notice this tendency amongst the leaders, as their actions affect the citizens of the nation, plus it makes news. But essentially, we all may be carrying these traits as well. We may not have been able to implement them in our lives on the scales of our leaders so have not seen light shined on its effects. Guru Ji says everyone is egoistic:

ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਕਉ ਦੀਨਾ ॥

“Haumai rog maanukh kau dheenaa.” (SGGS, 1140)

Translation: The mankind is afflicted with the disease of egotism.

It is only when the egotism is purged from within then the merger with Divine takes place:

ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਾ ਆਪਹਿ ਭਏ ॥ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਕੀ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਏ ॥੩॥

“Aap giaa taa aapeh bhae. Kirpa nidhaan kee saranee pae. 3.” (SGGS, 201)

Translation: When selfishness is gone from within, then one becomes (one with) the Lord Himself; (therefore) seek the Sanctuary of the treasure of mercy. ||3||

So, let us all seek the sanctuary of God, and pray that we rid ourselves of our ego. Let our success or achievements not cloud our ability to gauge the ground reality. Let this unfolding of history in front of our eyes trigger our own course correction in life.

SNSM elects Paramjeet Singh as 24th jathedar

By Asia Samachar | Malaysia |

Long-time volunteer Paramjeet Singh was elected unanimously to lead the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (SNSM), a Kuala Lumpur headquartered youth organisation that runs one of the world’s largest annual Sikh youth Gurmat camp.

Paramjeet will assume the position of jathedar, as the head of the organisation is called. The jathedar in turn appoints an executive committee to steer the oganisation for the next two years.

The 61-year-old volunteer takes over from Penang-based Harjinder Singh who has completed a two-year term.

Paramjeet is the 24th jathedar of SNSM, following in the footsteps of his late father, Jai Singh, who served as the 11th jathedar, from 1985 to 1988.

FOR MORE STORIES ON SNSM, CLICK HERE

Paramjeet had served some 35 years in the aviation engineering sector and is now involved in social humanitarian aid projects.

Speaking immediately after his appointment on Sunday (Aug 14), Paramjeet said: “Let’s keep our doors open. My door will always be open, doesn’t matter which brand, or label, you come under.”

SNSM’s signature events include the Annual Gurmat Parchaar Samelans, Holla Mahala Games and Punjabi Bhasha Mela.

SNSM also owns a 20-acres campsite at Kuala Kubu Bahru, an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur, called Khalsa Land.

SNSM has launched what it calls the Phase 1 of the Khalsa Land development project. This phase includes the construction of a multi-purpose hall, accommodation units and other supporting facilities estimated to cost a total of RM6 million.

Paramjeet takes helm of SNSM at a time when the six-decade old organisation is experiencing an erosion of its Sikhi parchaar (Sikh preaching) leadership and grapples with ways to connect with the present day Sikh youth, especially with the usage of the digital media.
