After one decade at its temporary premises, Gurdwara Sahib Bayan Baru moves into its spanking new complex in Bayan Lepas, Penang.

The momentous move, eagerly awaited by the Sanggat for the sole gurdwara serving Sikh in the south of the Penang island, began with a nagar kirtan, or a kirtan procession, today (9 June 2016).

On Sunday (12 June), Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is scheduled to join the opening ceremony at 11am.

The gurdwara serves Sikhs in Bayan Baru, Bayan Lepas, Sungai Ara, Sungai Nibong, Teluk Kumbar, Batu Maung and Balik Pulau on the Penang Island.

The other Penang-based gurdwaras are in the state capital Georgetown.

The new location is in a religious enclave with a church, a Buddhist temple and a Hindu temple as its neighbours.

An akhand path — a three-day non-stop reading of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib — will commence at 9am tomorrow (10 June).

Other events lined-up for tomorrow (Friday) are a movie screening at 11am and a Gurbani vichaar by Bhai Manjeet Singh (lawyer) entitled ‘Historical hukumnamas and their amazing accuracy’ at 4pm.

On 11 June (Sat), the programme includes the nishan salami (raising of the Khalsa flag) at 9am, another Gurbani vichaar session with Bhai Manjit at 11am followed by an Q&A at 2.30pm.
