Consistency and discipline. They best describe the success of Priya Kaur Jessy in achieving the perfect score of 9A+ in the recently announced Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results, the Malaysian equivalent to O-levels.
“I studied consistently several hours per day. I remained disciplined to cover all my subjects daily through intensive studying throughout the year. My handphone was also surrendered to my mother for safe-keeping so that it would not distract me unnecessarily,” she said.
Priya achieved the perfect result of 9A+, emerging as one of the two top two students in Convent Infant Jesus Johor Bahru and is among the top 13 in Johor, the state on the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia.
Throughout Malaysia, only 102 students who sat for the 2016 SPM examination scored the maximum 9A+.
An elated Priya also attributed her stunning success to her dedicated teachers and parents, who tirelessly spent hours after school to guide her to achieve academic excellence.
“My teachers have been exemplary and very dedicated, without whom this excellence would not be possible,” she added.
Her dad Balbeer Singh Jessy is the Head of Legal and Secretarial in the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) while mum Usha Devi d/o Tara Singh is an English and History teacher in the same school as Priya.
“My parents were two pillars who encouraged me to do my best without any pressure. And with the blessings and guidance of Waheguru and faith in the Almighty, it was easier for me to achieve my goals and aspirations. I always pray to Waheguru to assist me in all my studies and daily life, and all my prayers have been answered.”
Priya also thanked her sisters for all the support and guidance. Manpreet Kaur Jessy is studying Masters in Chemical Engineering with Environment in Nottingham University while Praveen Kaur Jessy is studying Hospitality and Tourism Course in the Management Development Institute of Singapore.

“My elder two sisters are gems and always my guiding force. Manpreet has also been my idol and tutor in Additional Mathematics. Whenever I needed help, she would guide me accordingly and solve my problems with the subject. Even my youngest sister, Priety Kaur Jessy, 10, encouraged me.”
Manpreet scored 10As in her SPM in 2011.
Priya comes from a family that is distinguished, in not only in serving the nation, but also the Sikh community.
He maternal grandfather Tara Singh s/o Nand Singh is currently the Vice-President of the Gurdwara Sahib Sungei Petani in Kedah. He was also the gurdwara secretary from 1976-2010 and helped in preparing the Guru ka Langgar for Sanggat (congregation).
Paternal great- grandfather, the late Master Gurbachan Singh Kaulsi of Port Dickson, was another renowned Sikh leader and founder of the Sikh Naujuwan Sabha Malaysia (SNSM).
Most of her uncles and aunties have served as teachers, academicians, police officers and lawyers in Malaysia.
Priya also excels in co-curriculum activities, having being an emcee at school events, an avid dancer and sportsgirl, having represented Johor in netball for the annual Malaysia-Singapore Sikh Games in 2014.
On her next step after the excellent results, Priya says she hopes to secure a scholarship to pursue her dream to do medicine.
“I love to serve the less fortunate and needy, and was very active in my schooldays in this aspect. I feel being a doctor would further allow me to serve the community who need medical care,” she says.
