Australian Sikhs are contributing far beyond the transport and gig-economy roles they are often associated with, says Amardeep Singh Gill, Chair of the Young Sikh Professional Network (YSPN).
YSPN’s 2023 Economic Impact Report found that Sikhs, who make up about 0.8% of Australia’s population, contribute more than 1% of the country’s economy, generating an estimated A$15.4 billion annually.
Speaking to SBS Punjabi, Gill said the figures highlight the community’s significant economic contribution, despite many Sikh migrants working in jobs below their qualifications because of skills and employment mismatches.
