Malaysian hockey has lost one of its great sons. Sarjit Singh — Olympian, national captain, Asian All-Star, national coach and one of the finest midfielders of his generation — has passed away at the age of 63.
Coach Sarjit died at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM at 10pm on Aug 23.
For those who followed Malaysian hockey during his playing days, Sarjit was much more than another player wearing the national colours. He commanded the midfield. He had vision, intelligence and flair.
Many from that generation will also remember his powerful overheads and long throws, sending the ball across huge distances and instantly changing the direction of play.
That was the Sarjit Singh we remember: a midfielder who could read the game, control its tempo and create the next move. His ability and hockey intelligence earned him recognition beyond Malaysia.
In 1987, he was selected for the Asian All-Star team — recognition of the stature he had attained on the continental stage. He wore the Malaysian captain’s armband for seven years and represented the country at two Olympic Games: Los Angeles 1984 and Barcelona 1992. He was also part of Malaysia’s Asian Games bronze-medal teams in New Delhi in 1982 and Beijing in 1990.
But Sarjit’s contribution to Malaysian hockey did not end when he put down his stick. He went from player to captain, coach and mentor.
Eventually, he was entrusted with perhaps one of the greatest responsibilities in Malaysian hockey — coaching the national team he once captained.
He served Malaysia as national head coach during an earlier stint before returning to the role in 2024, taking charge of the Speedy Tigers until March 2026.
Even in the final chapter of his coaching career, his commitment to Malaysian hockey remained undiminished. In March 2026, he guided Malaysia through the World Cup Qualifier in Ismailia, Egypt, where the team finished fourth.
For decades, in one capacity or another, Sarjit Singh gave Malaysian hockey his knowledge, experience, leadership and much of his life.
Today, we do not simply mourn the passing of a former national player and coach. We say goodbye to part of an era in Malaysian hockey — an era when players such as Sarjit took to the field carrying not merely a hockey stick, but the expectations of a nation.
