India demolish Pakistan 19-0, stay on course for third straight hockey title

India demolished Pakistan 19-0 in the Women’s Junior Asia Cup quarterfinals in Hulunbuir City on Thursday (Sept 10), powering into the last four with their biggest win of the tournament.

Pakistan, returning to the Women’s Junior Asia Cup for the first time since 2012, were overwhelmed by the defending champions in the one-sided quarterfinal.

The defending champions led 10-0 at half-time and added nine more goals after the break in a one-sided contest. India will face the winner of the South Korea-Malaysia quarterfinal for a place in the final.

Pooja Malik, who scored a hat-trick, was named Player of the Match.

Puja Sahoo opened the floodgates in the seventh minute before Roshni Aind struck two minutes later. Tanushree Dinesh Kadu, Sukhveer Kaur, Sanika Chandrakant Mane, Madhu Sidhar, Geeta Yadav, Tanuja Toppo and Malik also found the net as India surged to a double-digit lead by the interval. Mane scored twice in the opening half.

There was no respite for Pakistan after the break.

Purnima Yadav resumed the scoring in the 33rd minute, while Supriya struck twice. Malik added two more to complete her treble, with Krishna Sharma and Bhima Binima Dhan also getting on the scoresheet. Roshni added her second late in the match.

Pakistan rarely threatened as India dominated possession, territory and scoring opportunities throughout.

The victory keeps India on course for a third successive Women’s Junior Asia Cup crown after titles in 2023 and 2024, with only two matches now standing between them and another championship.
