Sikkim High Court orders status quo at Gurdwara Gurudongmar – WSN

| The World Sikh News | Sikkim, India  | 14 Sept 2017 | Asia Samachar |

VIRAL: Guru Granth Sahib and other belongings of Gurdwara Sahib Gurudongmar, Sikkim, supposedly carted out by a Buddhist sect in August 2017. One of the photos that became viral on the social media – Source / Unknown

The Sikkim High Court hearing a bunch of petitions by Sri Guru Singh Sabha Siliguri, acting on behalf of the SGPC and Amritpal Singh Khalsa Advocate and social activist Ajmer Singh Randhawa, in the case of attempted usurpation of historic Gurdwara Sahib Gurudongmar, Sikkim by a Buddhist sect, ordered a status quo for two weeks restraining both the Sikhs and the Buddhists from worshipping at the place till 6 October 2017, enabling the two sides to take necessary steps in the matter.

Ready to go into the merits of the case with full evidence, historian and authority on Gurdwara Gurudongmar – Col Dr. Dalvinder Singh Grewal, petitioners Amritpal Singh Khalsa and Ajmer Singh Randhawa and others were present in court. Sub divisional magistrate Sonam Tapgi Taahe was also present in the High Court.

Rupinder Singh of Sri Guru Singh Sabha Siliguri has been extremely helpful to all petitioners and ably coordinated all efforts, whereas the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee also assisted the petitioners.

Petitioner Amritpal Singh Khalsa from Mumbai, who was given the right to be impleaded by the Supreme Court of India, where he had petitioned in the said case two weeks ago, also pleaded the Sikkim High Court to grant the right to visit the Gurdwara Sahib as the permission to visit the historic site had been refused on two earlier occasions to worshippers as well as members of the SGPC. After an undertaking from the petitioner that they will not make any changes at the site, Chief Justice Satish Agnihotri of the Sikkim High Court granted permission to visit the site and directed the State counsel to make arrangements to allow the petitioner and other members of the delegation who are in Sikkim.

Speaking exclusively to World Sikh News prior to the hearing, Col Grewal told us that, “we have enough historic material to prove our case.”

Sri Guru Singh Sabha was represented by counsels Navin Barik, Sandip Majumdar and Deepu Prasad, while the State of Sikkim was represented by Additional Advocate General Mr. Karma Thinlay with Mr. Santosh Kr. Chettri, Ms. Pollin Rai and Ms. Sendenia Bhutia. The Buddhist Dsumza were represented by Ms. Panila Theengh and Ms. Tashi Doma Sherpa.

Amritpal Singh Khalsa said that he will let the Sikh community know the latest situation in Gurdwara Gurudongmar after a visit there tomorrow.

Although the Chief Justice had given verbal orders permitting Amritpal Singh Khalsa to go to Gurdwara Gurudongmar, the deputy commissioner of North Sikkim District, Dr. Karma Bonpo has sought 6 days, citing security reasons, effectively defeating the order of the Chief Justice.

Sikh volunteers reach Bangladesh-Myanmar border to provide langar to Rohingya refugees – Report

0

| Bangladesh / Myanmar | 13 Sept 2017 | Asia Samachar |

Volunteers of Sikh organisation Khalsa aid helping Rohingya refugees at Teknaf, a border town in Bangladesh (Express Photo)

A team of volunteers from Sikh organisation Khalsa Aid reached Bangladesh-Myanmar border Sunday night to provide relief to the lakhs of Rohingya Muslim families fleeing Myanmar.

Speaking to The Indian Express over phone, Amarpreet Singh, managing director, Khalsa Aid, India who has reached Teknaf, a border town in Bangladesh where the refugees are living in the camps, said that condition at the border was “miserable to say the least”.

“It was our first day here today and we did a pre-assessment before launching a major relief operation. We had come prepared for providing relief to some 50,000 people, but there are more than three lakh refugees here. They are living without water, food, clothes and shelter. They are sitting wherever they can find a corner. It is raining, but people do not have anywhere to go. It is miserable to say the least. We will be providing them langar food (community kitchen) and shelter. We are arranging tarpaulins but since the number of refugees have overwhelmingly exceeded our preparations, it can some time to make arrangements,” he was qouted in a report in the newspaper.

He added that there were huge camps at Teknaf and each one was crowded beyond its capacity.

“A camp can accommodate at least 50,000 people but in most of them there are more than one lakh refugees. But we are committed to run langar here (community here) till the crisis is not over. The priority is to not let anyone sleep without food. Children are roaming without clothes and begging for food. Those who do not get space in camps are sitting along roads in hope of getting food from someone,” he added.

Khalsa Aid team is now serving langar and water to the refugees. “Teknaf is almost 10 hours ride from the capital Dhaka from where we are ferrying all the material needed to prepare langar. Connectivity issues and rain are creating hindrances but we are trying our best to provide food to the maximum people at the earliest. The langar will continue here till crisis is not over and refugees continue to reach the border,” he added.

Another team of Khalsa Aid volunteers is expected to reach the border town Teknaf in coming days to assist in the relief operations, said Amarpreet.

Jeevanjyot Singh, a Khalsa Aid volunteer from Jammu & Kashmir who is also in Teknaf, said that refugees started from Myanmar by foot almost ten days back and then reached Teknaf through boats.

“They are in an extremely bad state as of now. They have nowhere to go. We have spoken to some families and they have told us that after crossing thick jungles on foot in Myanmar, they crossed border through boats and then resumed journey on foot. Most of them have traveled for more than ten days. Since then, children had no food or water. They are in dire need of food and water,” he told the same newspaper.

Myanmar led by its state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has been rapped by the United Nations for gross human rights violation against the tribe of Rohingya Muslims and as per UN estimates, 2.70 lakh Rohingya Muslims have already fled to Bangladesh and even more are trapped at the border.

With Love and Courage – Jagmeet

0

| Canada | 12 Sept 2017 | Asia Samachar |

Jagmeet Singh’s campaign website

As part of my campaign to become leader of one of Canada’s largest political parties, I held an event in the city where my political career began.

I walked into a room filled with supporters and old friends. As soon as I was introduced, a person confronted me with angry, hateful, and islamophobic comments. I had to act fast and set the tone for the room.

Despite this person’s anger and hate, I told them that we loved them, respected them, and would protect their rights. I chose not to answer the questions asked because I didn’t accept the premise.

SEE ALSO: Is Canada ready for Jagmeet Singh?

SEE ALSO: Jagmeet Singh: Sharp as hell in custom-design suits

Many people have commented that I could have just said I’m not Muslim. In fact, many have clarified that I’m actually Sikh. While I’m proud of who I am, I purposely didn’t go down that road because it suggests their hate would be ok if I was Muslim. We all know it’s not. I didn’t answer the question because my response to Islamophobia has never been “I’m not Muslim.” It has always been and will be that “hate is wrong”. Once allowed to grow, hate doesn’t pick and choose, it spreads like fire. Once we say it’s ok to hate someone based on their religion, we’re also opening the door to hate based on race, gender, sexuality, and more.

It’s important that we stand united against all forms of hate.

It takes love to understand that we’re all in this together. It takes courage to come together, demand better and dream bigger, so that we can build a world where no one is left behind.

With love and courage,

Jagmeet Singh

Candidate for Leader of Canada’s NDP
