A major Canadian political party will seek official recognition of the 1984 Sikh Genocide in Canadian Parliament in November.
“This month, when we mark 40 years, let it marked by a commitment to have India’s crimes be recognised as a genocide,” New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh said in a social media entry.
Acknowledging the genocide by the Indian government was the first important step towards community healing – and addressing intergenerational trauma, it said in an online petition. See here.
During the 1984 Sikh Genocide, the petition said thousands of innocent Sikh men, women and children were brutally attacked and murdered across India. Further, state actors utilized government resources as part of a premeditated plan to identify their victims.
It added: “The Government of India’s own Nanavati Commission Report acknowledges the killings were systematic and organized and Indian courts have observed genocide has been duly proved and established.
“Acknowledging this genocide is the first important step towards community healing – and addressing intergenerational trauma.
“As such, we call on the Government of Canada to formally recognize this state-organized killing spree as a genocide.
“As per the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the Indian government must take all reasonable measures to bring those responsible for this organized campaign of violence to justice, including criminal prosecution.”
