Rising above competition should be a trait by default for Sikhs for the quest to learn is inherent, technically. And reading is key to an enlightened mind, says TARANJIT KAUR in an opinion piece on youth leadership.

More often than not, life is typically about ‘what is in it for me’? Decisions center on the short-term, with quick-wins being top of mind. Such a norm worked perfectly-well for the longest-time, raising doubts if the modus-operandi is still viable, especially for youth of today when making the crucial decision of where next with life.

The social dynamics are ever-changing in today’s fast moving world, where interconnectivity makes competition aggressive, more so for budding talents. Sadly, fiscal resources are scarce, what more in the current economic climate.

Almost every aspect of life demands ingenuity, from thinking, to doing and in making notable achievements. What does this spell for youth aspiring to attain greater heights? It spells – change; in the way one thinks, assesses situations, defines growth, solves problems, manages relationships, persuades others and more.

As complex as it may seem, the route towards embracing the tenets of success entails persistence in upholding the concept of life-long learning.  Indeed, this resonates perfectly well with the fundamentals of being a Sikh, which translates into a learner. So for Sikhs of all age groups, rising above the competitions should be a trait by default, for the quest to learn is inherent, technically.

There is much to explore and it goes beyond mastering knowledge in one’s discipline of choice. This means youth must collectively keep abreast of global business acumen, and possessing analytical skills to make adequate decisions focused on the longer-term. In a nutshell, reading is passport for an enlightened mind. It allows one to enhance the current model of thinking, if not innovate. The key question here being – how much value-adding material does one acquire, especially when the wealth of information is at one’s finger tips.

Knowledge alone is insufficient, if decoupled from the concept of growing together. In the face of rising competition, every person becomes an opponent, and rightfully it is valid. Inherent strength is premised on diversity, and thought leadership requires inclusion of others’ viewpoints. Realistically, teamwork extends from working together on meeting business targets to thriving on individual capabilities.

It is time youth set new parameters of growth. Simply said, the challenge herein lies in constantly being ahead of the game to lead the way. It is about honing holistic leaders who are empowered, accountable and dynamic enough to redefine preset realities.

Worth asking, must one plus one only equal to two? Let’s do a stock take by first asking –  how ready are we to start shaping the future as the modern-age youth, instead of merely accepting the norm?

  1. Congratulations for a well balanced article.
    However it is equally important that one learns to distinguish between needs and wants and ensure that one works for needs first and only later go after wants if their are excess funds.
    As examples
    A roof is a need but owning a want especially in today’s high cost properties and finabce costs.
    A transport is need but owning a high cost m/cycle or car a want.
    A handphone is a need but high cost smartphone (whose 90% features may never be used) is a want.
    Same may apply to what and where you eat.
    There are many other ways where people end up working to pay for wants and in the process many lose what is most valuable: time for self or family or friends. NEED IS BALANCED LIFE.
